How Upskilling Increases Employee Engagement
45% of American employees say if they were offered upskilling on the job, they would switch careers. Would you? Reply back to this email and let me know.
I don’t know about you, but that is a powerful opportunity for organizations struggling to recruit and retain employees to stand out and brand themselves.
Learning is a powerful force for employee engagement, but they want to do it on the job because it is hard for them to do it outside of work. With so many changes happening, it only makes business sense for leaders to rise to the challenge.
On top of that, close to half of employees say they feel isolated and not included. This worsens in a hybrid environment because so many are struggling with poor communication practices.
So, what are you to do? What does it mean for you as a manager, leader, employee or customer?
It means that you have a chance to maximize your full potential, position yourself strategically in the workforce, and advance your career.
I work with customers on a weekly basis who are good at what they do, but want to get even better. They run into outdated mindsets and beliefs that learning should be done outside of the workplace, and funded by the employee, but this only shows us who is using antiquated thinking models.
When most people think about learning and engagement, they often think about the material itself–the book or course materials that are being taught. But there’s a lot more going on than just that. Upskilling is an experience, not just content. It’s an experience that can be shared with others, and it builds relationships between people in your team and beyond.
The key is to implement winning best practices to make it sustainable.
- Make learning design a top priority to avoid setting employees up for failure and just checking a box.
- Engage external third parties to bring a fresh perspective to the learning process
- Form small group communities and build continuity into the process. One-off training is like throwing money down the drain…seriously.
- Use unconventional and non-traditional topics. These days, many are burdened with thoughts about caregiving, children, illnesses, grief, relationships and more. Facilitate ways to help people through life issues to increase performance.
When you’re engaged with your work, it’s easier to stay motivated and focused on the task at hand. When you’re learning something new, you’re able to apply what you’ve learned in new ways and use those new skills in different situations.
Upskilling increases employee engagement, builds trust in your organization, and creates opportunities for growth and development.
